South London  Renovation with Bespoke Interiors

The pre-existing property layout featured a long corridor connecting the front door and living  room to the kitchen and dining area on the opposite side of the plot, with bedrooms and a bathrooms separating the two.

The approach underpinning the renovation project sought to improve the experience of moving through the property by ‘shortening’ the corridor for the benefit of the main living areas.

The corridor area close to the entrance door was visually incorporated into the living room through the introduction of a tall arched door with a deep threshold concealing a double pocket door. The opening is reflected by an arched mirror in the corridor, thereby creating the illusion of a deeper living space, as opposed to a long and narrow entrance lobby.

The arched threshold is used as a device to frame and separate spaces with irregular shapes, which become more proportionate and harmonious, as well as more private and clutter-free: an example of this is in the reconfiguration of the L-shaped kitchen, which is visually subdivided into a square dining area with fully concealed appliances and a scullery/sink area easily accessible from the cooking area but hidden by a timber arch incorporating a secret pull-out pantry and storage unit.

Similarly, the bathroom is subdivided into two square areas with the shower and toilet area fully hidden by a semi-arch whose reflection into the continuous mirror wall opposite transforms into a full arch framing a freestanding basin and arched niche visible from the bathroom entrance.
